Understand renewable energy

Separate generation, storage and demand so that a grid transition is easier to reason about.

Language and country are separate preferences. If a lesson is not translated, its English source text remains visible.

Reset

Sun, wind, water and other renewable sources can generate energy without burning fossil fuels, but a working energy system also needs networks, storage, flexible demand, maintenance and materials.

Three ideas to keep separate

  • Generation is the energy produced by a source at a time and place.
  • Storage shifts energy across time; it does not create energy.
  • Efficiency and demand reduction can lower the amount a system needs to supply.

Try this

Ask a better local question

  1. Choose one building, community or tariff question.
  2. Name whether it concerns generation, storage, demand or the grid.
  3. Use an official local source before comparing products or making a purchase.

Context for this view

Global context

Energy systems combine sources, networks, storage and demand; no single technology answers every context.

This lesson has a reviewed evidence reference. The optional table may be unavailable without changing the lesson text.

Period: 2022–2025 · Unit: % · Source update: 2026-09-15T23:00:00+0200

Annual observations are historical, not live readings. Renewable-energy share is not the same measure as renewable electricity share. Eurostat flags and missing observations remain part of the interpretation.

Optional knowledge checks

Choose one answer, read the explanation, or skip a question. Nothing here blocks the next step.

1What does storage do in an energy system?

Not answered.

2What definition is attached to the Eurostat example in this lesson?

Not answered.

3Which local question is more useful than asking whether one technology is simply ‘best’?

Not answered.
